Update!

Hey all! I am taking a moment to update everyone who follows me. I am now living in Hagerstown. My girlfriend and I have gotten a place and we love it. I have been doing a lot of art lately. I have been doing tattoo design and painting. Examples below…

This is an interesting time in life. Sometimes I think, rather hope that everyone in their twenties feels at least close to how I have felt recently:

Trying to find your place in society without losing your self actualization, exploring your talents and exploring what makes you tick. Shedding innocence for reality… This is mostly I believe a time of growth and learning. I hope this post finds everyone well. Heres the link to my latest work.

Reddit Drawme is cool

A friend of mine introduced me to Reddit’s drawme page. Basically people go on to this forum at drawme and post a picture of themselves for artists on reddit to take a shot at drawing for them. The general feel of the forum is very open and accepting. There is a spectrum of drawing style and ability on the threads. And people seem extremely grateful that artists would take the time to draw them. One picture I drew was of a young child’s kindergarten picture. I can just imagine the child’s positive reaction to the picture of him being made into a drawing. Another was a drawing of a man and his father that the man’s girlfriend wanted drawn as a surprise for him. I have done several drawings for the site and I have to say that it felt good to make drawings for these random people just to make them happy. If you’re an artist and you are experiencing artist’s block this can also give you excellent material and inspiration for pics that will be seen by many other people. And like I said before, even the drawings of low technical skill are appreciated. Here are some examples of my contributions to the forum:

Whitetail Ski Resort Productivity

So I live near a little ski resort in Western M.D. I used to come here when I was a kid and watch my brothers ski and snowboard. I love this place! Haha the vibes are just so cool. I am sitting at the window in the lodge watching skiers and snowboarders come down the mountain. I have a great view of all the lifts. My older brother brought up the idea that this would be a great place to relax and work on our resumes and hang out.

It definitely is a place with a good mood about it.

Mr Spock

Mr Spock

I spent all day working on this painting of Mr Spock. I love the character of Spock. I have been watching a lot of the original series of Star Trek lately. The whole idea of Spock suppressing his natural state as an overly emotional being into the cool and calm one that we see on TV is very interesting. If we as humans could learn to control our own emotions what could we achieve? If we thought logically and were not slaves to our emotions. It would be a challenge indeed.

Dharma

So lately, meaning in the past few months I have been very attracted to the teachings of the Buddha. It started with meditation and then grew to include research into the foundational teachings. At first I was very comforted by the peace I found in meditation at a very stressful and hard time. I discovered that I need to start with my self when it comes to love. Any other teaching falls short in my book. You need to comfort yourself, forgive your past and look on your experience with kindness. When you do this you can really be ok with yourself. You see yourself clearly for the first time. This is what meditation is. A large part is observing what is in your mind. What is there? Here is a drawing I did of the Buddha. It was done in pen. Enjoy.

Today’s work

I substituted today for a class from hell. Kids these days are rough. I found some time later tonight to get some art done. I revisited an old self portrait acrylic I had done in college and combined it with one of my drawings. I did a lot of line work with the brush tool. It is very fun to experiment with old pieces in photoshop. Anyone else like to experiment?

Hi! Thanks for all the recent likes I have gotten. I am very glad I restarted this blog. I will be posting some new work soon. I have been busy since I moved back to Hagerstown.

I think I would also like to take this opportunity to properly introduce myself. I am Zack. I grew up in Western Maryland around Hagerstown. I went to Towson University where I graduated in 2011 with a BS in Illustration. I spent a small stint living in Baltimore before moving back here. I do art every day. When I am not doing art I am reading, watching sitcoms, Food Network or History channel, playing with my chihuahua Ringo, and substitute teaching. I hope to move to NYC soon. The plan is this summer.

So I am glad you are checking out my art and I hope you enjoy the posts to come. Here is a recent drawing for your viewing pleasure 🙂 It is named Entertained Angels after the verse, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.”
